Give us your best suggestion on helping the environment and win an Ovi Music voucher!

Nokia is serious about being green which includes an extensive recycling program rolled out across the globe, including South Africa. The company launched their first recycling campaign in the UK and Sweden back in 1996 and rolled out this campaign locally in SA in 2007.

They were the first cell phone provider to do this. Nokia launched their local take-back awareness campaign again this year and now have take back bins at 35 Nokia outlets throughout the country. Did you know between 65 and 80 percent of the Nokia cell phone can be recycled? The rest of the components are used to fuel the recycling process.

The company is currently recycling the devices it collects, but it’s worth noting that Nokia will take back any make of cellphone, not just their own. The contents of the bins are sent to qualified recyclers, for environmentally friendly and responsible reclaiming of the materials.

Nokia has also launched other eco-campaigns including reducing their manufacturing carbon footprint by switching to smaller packaging; only using recycled materials in their product packaging and also launching sustainable food gardens in SA as part of their drive to give back to both the local community and the environment.

So, we are calling on all eco-friendly and green Ringaz readers out there. We would like to know what green initiatives you or your company are up to and how you are ‘doing your bit’ to making our planet cleaner and environmentally sustainable for future generations.

Of course your conscience and common sense are the sticks Ringaz readers, but we also are offering you a carrot too J in the form of a free Ovi Music voucher for the best ecologically friendly and sustainable development initiative you are involved in.

Send us in your descriptions and let’s start talking green!

PS: Please don’t forget to also unplug those chargers as well as cleaning out those old cell phone drawers for recycling.

PPS: For those of you going to Rocking the Daisies and Rocking the Gardens, don’t forget to take all your old and broken cellphones of all makes to the concert and drop them off there for recycling.

*This competition is now closed, congratulations to Pjn123 who was won a R200 music track voucher.

Cant you pass an idea along for better chargers. The problem with unplugging chargers is that the plug is normally hidden so not so easy.

Now if we had a charger with a on/off switch near the charger point we can easily just switch it off. So the power from the outlet will first need to go to the switch and then back to the transformer. So switching it off will use no power anymore :)

I have seriously never seen any of those bins. Make them more visible?

I would also encourage the behaviour by giving for example R50 off the next Nokia phone purchase.

Student loans do ecfeft your score. Right now the account is not in default, so it’s not a negative entry. However, it won’t positively ecfeft your score until you start making payments. To build a credit score, look into a secured credit card. Charge a small amount (definitely less than 30% of the credit limit) and make on-time monthly payments. A secured card means you put the money down up front. The credit limit will be equal to the amount you put down. Creditors do this to ensure they can take the money if you miss payments. Shop around before applying to a secured credit card. Some of them charge outrageous fees and interest. Also make sure the card reports to the credit agencies, otherwise it’s not building your credit score.

Well i think there should be built in application on nokia where as soon as the charging gets completed , the application sounds a loud alarm and keeps on ringing till the charger hasn’t been unplugged. That will make it useful to take a first step towards a greener world.

More phones with USB charging, breathing light on phones with them, blink continuously when the phone is charged and when users check the phone to see if there are new messages etc there is a notification to unplug the charger as the phone is finished charging(as I know when my breathing light is flashing I check my phone to see I have received a msg).

@pjn123 – Thank you for your suggestion – it complements what we have already done our phones – i.e. alerts to unplug the charger when you it is fully charged and disconnected from the phone etc. We will pass your suggestion on to our R&D team and who knows, they might just develop something along these lines! CONGRATULATIONS on winning the Ovi Music Voucher!
