Best Nokia ever? The mighty N8 is rising

August 10, 2010
By

Smartphones today continue to impress the pants off of the public, especially each time a new model is introduced. With the Nokia N8, that level of awe has to ratchet up a good few notches. In this, certainly the best Nokia ever to see the light of day, everything – and that means absolutely everything – about the device appears to be engineered to perfection. Ergonomically and aesthetically, it raises the bar in terms of materials and construction: from the case, which starts out as a single piece of anodized aluminium, to the buttons, to the screen, Nokia’s N8 is designed to be the best.

Preview of the Nokia N8

Feature-wise, the N8 packs enough for at least four blogs, so we’ll save some of the good stuff for later. But as digital cameras and the ability to share (through Facebook, Twitter and Flickr, among other sites) becomes a priority for more people than ever before, we’ll start with this aspect of the master Nokia.

Nokia-N8-with-Screen

Twelve megapixels. That’s right, the N8 delivers a massive 12 megapixels resolution, through Carl Zeiss optics and with a Xenon flash, capable too, of recording HD video. That’s better than some purpose-designed, latest and greatest digital cameras.

The international ‘Conversations with Nokia’ website has a very informative blog which gives complete details on the Nokia N8 camera, covering everything from how the camera works, why (and how) the step up to 12 megapixels, what to expect in terms of image quality (and video quality) and more.

What’s more, this smartphone has an HDMI-output. That means not only sharing your sharp, detailed images online, it also means sharing them in the living room, on your plasma or LCD high-def television. That port further means you can, in theory, chuck out the DVD player in favour of the smartphone: you can play HD movies by saving them to a MicroSD card, inserting into the Nokia and hitting play. Could this be the way of the future? The smartphone as a portable entertainment centre, ready to be hooked to any available screen to play back any digital content?

Range of the Nokia N8

Related to the powerful camera and HD video capture capability is the Nokia N8’s impressive memory specifications. It comes standard with 16GB built-in, which is expandable to 48GB. That should provide plenty of capacity to store the images, video and voice that the N8 is ready to record. What’s certain, even at this early stage, is that the Nokia N8 is perhaps the most exciting smartphone to come out of Nokia – and perhaps the most exciting smartphone ever, period.

@Marc – This is a SCAM – please ignore these kind of SMS or email messages and don’t respond! We will never run random competitions like this – firstly we don’t have any Nokia owner’s details and secondly any competition we run, you will have to enter and it will be on Ringaz, Facebook and Twitter! Please warn all your friends and family too as it is not unique to Nokia

  6. Violet van Zyl says:

What about downloading Sasol birds app? Would love to do this!

    • NokiaRSA says:

@Violet – We are working with the Developer of the app to try and get it onto Ovi Store, it is a very large file so there is a lot of work that needs to go into it to make it mobile! We will keep you posted on any developments :)

  7. Wicus says:

Hi Nokia: Can you please help i have the DVB-H headset and it works like a charm on my N8. I have treid to connect the phone to a screen to display the tv on the screen but all i get is the word NOKIA in blue in the centre of the screen. This is using the jack output as well as the HDMI output. Can i display mobile tv on a other screen and how do i go about it.

    • NokiaRSA says:

@Wicus – We are checking with our Product Team and also the Accessories team to see if this is possible and we will get back to you ASAP

    • NokiaRSA says:

@Wicus – We have just received feedback from our Product team and unfortunately the TV-Out function of the N8 becomes disabled when you use the DVB-H headset as there are copyright laws etc. that the service has to adhere to. We hope that this answers your question.

    • shaneh says:

  8. Manie says:

Morning, I would like to complain about the worst phone I have ever had. The Nokia N8. I got my phone in November, had it two weeks and it broke, sent it away for 3 weeks and got it back. Had it for one day and it broke again, recieved a brand new n8 in January. After about a month it started freezing and would then restart.

It has gotten worse tillthe point of ressetting 4-8 times a day, especially when trying to send an sms, in the last half hour I had to urgently sms someone and it froze 4 times.

The phone is still spotless and has more than 12gb availale space one, have maybe one or two games and maybe 8 apps from ovi store. I will not recomend this phone to anyone. If could just work then I would be happy as I love the features.

    • NokiaRSA says:

@Manie – We are really sorry to hear about the troubles you are having with your N8 – we are going to get one of our Customer Care managers to contact you ASAP to see how we can resolve this issue

  9. marc says:

hey nokia i have some problems again with my n8, the plastic part on the bottom by the menu key has come loose. ive been to vodashop to repair it but they say they will have to replace the whole body because its constructed like that. i bought it by mtn and they told me mtn must send to you guys for repairs. but will my warranty cover that? if not how much will it cost? thanx

    • NokiaRSA says:

@marc – We have passed your information onto our Customer Care guys to touchbase with you and give you feedback on the 24-Month Warranty and what is covered

  10. john says:

hey nokia or anyone here can you tell me were can i buy that dvb-h headset please and how does it work? is it the same as the drifter? and lastly nokia will my n8 ever work with that drifter? it just sucks to see how that stupid iphone can

    • NokiaRSA says:

@john – The DVB-H Headset is available from QD Cellular and some of the Vodashops. It enables you to receive the Multichoice DVB-H broadcast on your N8 (similar to what drifter does) – it works pretty similar, but only via the Headset being connected to the phone in stead of a Bluetooth connection between the device and the drifter. The reason the Drifter is not compatible with the N8 is because we have the DVB-H headset. Please let us know if you need anything else

    • john says:

whats the price? and whats the monthly subscription? and what channels do you get?
