Microsoft reveals major update to Windows Phone in ‘Mango’

July 1, 2011
By

News of Windows Phone’s Mango update dominated technology headlines late last month, as Microsoft announced the next major release to their new mobile operating system. Importantly for all the Nokia fans out there, Mango will be the version of the software that Nokia will ship its first Nokia device using the Windows Phone platform.

Pegged as an alternative to the smartphone status quo, Mango will deliver a wave of new features when it comes to communications, apps and the Web. The new release will be made available to all existing Windows Phone handsets as a free upgrade and will ship on new phones later this year. Windows Phone will also add support for additional languages and expand access to apps by launching Marketplace in new countries, including South Africa.

Nazeer Suliman, consumer and online lead at Microsoft South Africa said, “In Mango we are taking advantage of the unique way Windows Phone bring people, information and experiences together to deliver smarter and easier communications, apps and access to the web”.

According to Gartner, Nokia remains the world’s largest handset manufacturer as measured by sales. Nokia sold 107.6 million cell phones during its first quarter, for 25 percent market share. IDC predicts that, because of the Nokia deal, Windows Phone would rank second among smartphone operating systems by 2015.

it will flop, it will be like any other WP meaning it will be like LG, Samsung, HTC and Fujitsu to name a few. I love Nokia but iSee this partnership as a flop…
Nokia won’t be unique like it is now or if it would be with MeeGo, all we have to do is wait and see.

I definitely see a lot of potential especially since Nokia’s hardware is really strong & windows OS is lot more efficient. Nokia’s touch (with full fledged maps, amazing ovi stores & a lot more)with win OS is definitely something that we are excited & waiting for.
