Affordable might: The Nokia C5-03

The first thing that struck me about the new Nokia C5-03 is that you don’t have to have hardware that ‘shows your individuality’ but looks exactly the same as everyone else’s phone. That’s because it comes in a range of funky colours. Of course, it is the innards that actually determine meaningful customisability in the form of apps, and this handset delivers handsomely in that regard.

While this smartphone is packed to the gills with great features, let’s bear in mind first its market positioning. At a price of just over R1500 from most dealers, the Nokia C5-03 is an entry-level handset which gives you the opportunity to get into the world of smartphones and apps, without a big impact on the pocket.

That said, let’s take a quick look at the vital stats. The C5-03 offers a 3.2 inch screen and runs the Symbian S60 5th edition operating system. This provides the ability to run ‘key’ apps like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. These and many, many more are available through the Ovi Store.

Cameras have become essential equipment, especially with social networking sites; the C5-03’s 5MP camera means you’ll be taking great snaps and video, especially with the full-screen viewfinder. Equally important is GPS navigation, high-speed connectivity, email (with attachment) integration, music player and FM radio – all of which and more is available in a mere 93 grammes of handset. That’s just the top-line features – for more details than you can shake a stick at, check out the local C5-03 page.

What you can expect from this phone is solid performance and some high-end features on an entry-level phone (such as an accelerometer and the free voice navigation, something no other handset at this price point can offer).

You will also make an ecologically sound choice with the Nokia C5-03; just about the whole phones is recyclable as is the packaging. For a better view of this handset, check out this video; note the snappy response to input courtesy of a fast processor.

What the C5-03 delivers in spades is the full smartphone experience at a fraction of the cost. While looking great, too.
